Own or subscribe: the true cost of a website
Build, hosting, support and exit terms: what to compare before choosing a website proposal.
A website can be paid for when it is built or through a subscription. Before comparing prices, check what each proposal includes, which costs recur and what you can take with you when the contract ends.
The “bought” site
The build fee covers the agreed pages and features. Hosting, the domain and ongoing support may be separate costs. You can hire a provider for maintenance, with the included work and price agreed in advance.
The “subscription” site
A recurring payment may bundle the build, hosting or certain interventions. The exact services depend on the contract. Check the commitment period, included changes, response times and terms for moving the site elsewhere.
What the proposal should specify
The proposal should separate the build, provider fees and any ongoing support. It should also set out rights to content and code, third-party licences, access management and exit terms.
At Nuvo, we favour domain and hosting accounts under your control. Deliverables, responsibilities and recurring services are agreed in writing. This lets you compare total costs over the same period and choose the support you need.
